File of luminescence in an internally-desynchronised plant.

Caution - the file is a 2.6 MB .AVI, which can be viewed in Win95+, in recent browsers or with a plug-in.

Legend for the desynchronised plant movie.

A tobacco PHYB:LUC plantlet had its leaves entrained to opposite 12h light- 12h dark cycles by covering each leaf alternately with opaque foil, then imaging its luminescence under constant light. Successive frames were obtained every 2 hours, after 24 to 86h of constant light. The sequence of median-filtered, false-coloured luminescence images was assembled into a video. The luminescence pattern from this sequence is quantified in the chart below. The leaves do not resynchronise, indicating that the clocks in each leaf are independent.
